From Lame to Galloping!

Blue is a rambunctious 5-year-old chestnut Arab Horse, with a big white face and hilarious personality who nearly did not make it to 5 years of age.  

Here is Blue’s story of how homeopathy & herbs helped him through an accident everyone said he wouldn't survive.

Blue has always been dramatic for as long as I have known him, we met when he was 4 months old.

Blue and his friends used to like practicing “dressage” moves and duets up and down the pasture. One mid afternoon in March 2010 I had just sat down and heard the familiar galloping of hooves so looked out my window to see Blue bucking and twisting down the pasture. He slid to a stop and then screamed a scream I have never heard from a horse before. I ran, he turned, looked me in the eye and held up his left front foot which was covered in wet mud. Blood was pouring from his leg and he couldn’t put it down. We hopped to my neighbor’s barn and started hosing him down whilst calling the vet.  The vet arrived within 15 minutes!!!! Blue’s wound was thoroughly cleaned while I rang UC Davis.  Within an hour we were on our way.

The hospital recommended Blue be put to sleep as he would not be able to even walk properly ever again.  He had severed his Superficial Digital Tendon over 75% and damaged 2 others but the joint capsule was intact. Given my experience, I asked the faculty surgeon to graphically explain to me what had happened. I made a decision that there was still hope for him. I asked if they would work with me in treating Blue with homeopathy and herbs alongside their surgeries and rehabilitation.  Davis agreed.

After necrosis (the dying of soft tissue) was conquered, 3 surgeries, 2 colics, homeopathic remedies, Chinese  and Western herbs, buckets of love, (all adding up to 3 weeks in UC Davis Intensive Care), I had to decide what to do next. A friend of mine, Cindy Schleuss, owns Horse Savvy Ranch in Petaluma, California, where along with training there is a focus on rehabilitation following more complimentary methods.  I decided that was the best place for him.

And we kept going with herbal formulas and homeopathic remedies.

Over the next year Blue had daily attention and rehabilitation including regular bodywork, slow increase in exercise, and his herbal formulas altered as his healing progressed.

By October, 2010, Blue could walk with spring in his step, and he could trot a straight line of 50 yards.  The focus was now turned to his back and hind end as he had limped around for so many months.  Blue’s body needed to re learn how to carry his weight as a 4 legged horse not a 3 legged horse.

By early 2011 Blue was able to stand and let me pick up his feet one foot at a time to take his weight to the other 3 including the bad leg. Up until this point he would lay down for me to trim his feet which I did weekly to deter a club foot forming.  By spring Blue could buck and rodeo around his pen, a year after his accident he can gallop up and down the mountain.

There were many herbs and remedies used in Blue’s case, a lot of gentle physical therapy and body work, along with patience, patience and more patience.

It is August 2012, and Blue is now back under saddle and enjoying being a normal horse again. 

Herbs and Homeopathy played an enormous part in Blue’s healing after Davis had done the 3 surgeries and worked with me on the administration of the formulas when I could not be at Davis.

We are so glad he is still with us and can enjoy life trotting about.
