In Chinese Medicine (Acupuncture) we ask you for all your symptoms- not just what is bothering you today- so that we can begin to develop a clear portrait of what your body leans towards when it is imbalanced.
How does this work? With pain specifically, one of the ways we work is to locate where the pain is physically and label it with a "channel" or "meridian" that runs along that same path (channels are mostly named after the organs). Then we ask you about other common internal symptoms related to that channel being blocked, excess or deficient, and we work to unblock, and balance that channel out every time we see you (once or twice a week for a month or so).
So, even if you come in with shoulder pain, we work to regulate your entire body for proficient health. In this way you will likely see improvement in areas you didn't even think to bring up in your "shoulder pain consult"; sleep, immune system, digestion, thought patterns, etc... all of it starts to feel a lot more clear and healthy. Old symptoms go away and the whole body is recharged.
Then what? Does it wear off?
If old habits continue then, yes the symptoms might return, but generally over time, all we have to do is a quick reset button for you every few months and you will stay open and healthy. Of course that is unless you accidentally sprain your ankle, or some virus steps in your way, in which case we start again with that new channel in mind, or simply add in points for that injury.
